Yep, loosen up the crop and you might try bouncing the flash if you have it on the camera or even a diffuser would help. At some point you will want to get it off camera as straight on flash is not very flattering.


Keep it up, its a lot of experimentation with flash. Learn to figure out your shadows by watching the direction of light.

This is a great example of the inverse square law and how it effects the light fall off from the flash being so close. If you back up, the light would have illuminated her neck and face more evenly.

I used Portrait Professional to edit it with... I really didn't do much. Just let the software do the defaults.

I cropped/rotated in LR just to remove the background and get in the portrait orientation... It was a JPEG file, so there wasn't as much range as with a NEF file...

Only thing I added in PP was some "catch lights" to the eyes...

As has been mentioned... the harsh flash also limits the range with which to work with...
 
The second one is over processed for my taste. It is to harsh. The original is to bright, to much contrast and to much color saturation and to sharp.

All I did is tone everything down a bit.
