Hi all...

This is my first attempt at photographing stars... the night sky.

It would be great if you could take a minute & see the picture at imageshack cos i think the forum uploader is stripping something off the image & the colors are going off.
You'll know what i mean.
Do take a look & critique please!

Nikon D5100 with 18-55mm lens at 18mm
15 sec exposure at f/3.5

Thanks!

First, I'm not one qualified to "Critique" a photo. I do, however, like the shot. Mind if I ask what you had the ISO set to? I've tried night shots with my D60 but it starts getting grainy at ISO400 and is totally flooded with noise at 800.

Mike, i shot this at ISO 100..
Would've shot at ISO 50 if the D5100 allowed it :)

Added the ISO setting to the first post.

Incidentally i have not added any noise reduction on this.
I actually forgot to even luminance adjust in Lightroom cos i didn't see much noise that would hurt the pic

Wow.

I believe you are correct, in that the image at ImageShack shows a more detailed image. Perhaps it is because, at least on my monitor, it is a *much larger* image, at ImageShack. That is a mind-boggling shot of the stars!

I did a quick count, and I believe in the section of sky you captured, there are 2,983,765 and 1/2 visible stars! I think that might be a record of some kind. :star:

Thanks for posting!

When I saw the thumbnail, it looked like it was completely black, I thought it was a joke pic of a 1st attempt.

Love all the different colours of the different types of star.
I live in an area where the sky never shows too many stars, when I did take a shot, my missus said it was a faulty camera with hot pixels and to take the camera back to the shop.
