monopod for my nikons

Hello there,
there are times that I would like to have a tripod to be able to shoot at lower shutter speeds. Not just for my dslr but also for my nikon f100 film cameras.
I know only that a monopod should be high enough to be close to your height (I am around 183cm)

I do not know also which ballhead to pick to be able to change fast orientation from landscape to portrait.

Budget wise I do not feel restricted and I would prefer to to invest to something that would last and would collapse small to fit in my backpack.
Any ideas?
Alex

Do you use this combo for your bird shots? How good would it be on bird in flight?
Birds? The pigeons? Those I take handheld. I don't do BIF so I don't think I can help you with that one, Don. I only use it if I am trying to keep my ISO low enough--haven't used it in a while, but this head is terrific for a monopod.

What lenses are you looking to use on the Monopod, most big lenses have the tripod foot that lets you quickly go from Portrait to Landscape ...

so you do not need a ballhead ?

I'm simply saying it is more difficult to adjust a ballhead when it is on a monopod compared to when it is on a tripod. It would probably be better to have some type of head on a monopod which is why I mentioned the Manfrotto one. It is a head that seems to be very well suited for a monopod. If I'm not mistaken, someone once posted about using a monopod without a head...I don't think it worked well that way.

I HAVE 2 MONO-PODS MOUNTED WITH A MANFROTTO 322RC2 HEAD. I LOVE IT. MINE IS MOUNTED VERTICALLY.
The 322RC2 is unique in that it allows the camera mounting assembly to be positioned for left or right hand operation, in horizontal or vertical position, and in addition, will allow you to unblock, move, position and lock your camera with one hand in one position. This is due to the revolutionary design of its grip handle which incorporates the ball lock lever. The very act of taking your hand away from the grip locks the head into position, which eliminates the extra step of having to tighten a knob or lever before being ready to shoot. The tension of the ball can be adjusted to accommodate the load weight.
This head is not suitable for continuous tracking of moving subjects, it is not practical since one must always grip the lever to release the ball and thus your hand would tire after prolonged use.
An ideal head for action or wedding and portrait photographers.
Fast, one-handed positioning Customizable for left or right-handed use, horizontal or vertical Built-in bubble level Optional 322RA adapter or 341 Junior Elbow bracket allow camera to be centered over tripod in horizontal and vertical axes 1-DSC_4811.jpg

JUST PRESS THE TRIGGER AND YOU CAN GO FROM LANDSCAPE TO PORTRAIT SUPER FAST.

That kind of ballhead should work well. I didn't know they still made them with the one-handed grip. Is yours the same as this one? This one's plate is lower down on the grip. Yours looks like it is on the end. Or can the plate be moved?

yes, the plate can be moved. The plate is attached by 2 screws (plate has 6 screw holes for different mounting) the handle has 3 locations for mounting the plate. In my picture you can see the mounting holes
on the side.
