Want a Rugged, possibly heavy monopod?

Been looking for a really solid, rugged and no thrills monopod for sports, mainly soccer and motorsports.

Currently for a D300 with grip and AFS 70 - 300 but might purchase a 70/80 - 200 F2.8 at some point.

Not worried about light weight, I can often work from my car boot at my local circuit and travel light most of the time. I am quite tall though (6Ft 2") and would like something rugged enough to sling the whole lot over my shoulder if feasible. Mud, rain and dirt likely from time to time.

In my part of the UK not many camera shops about and none that can offer anything approaching a choice?

All advertising seems to focus on lightness and added features like mini legs and stuff I don't (think?) I want

Prepared to pay for something quality if required...

Also no experience of tripods or monopods, what sort of head would I require if at all?

Thanks in advance~

I might suggest the Manfrotto 680B monopod, with the ballhead of your choice. The 680 is not the cheapest but it'll be the last monopod you buy.

A good ballhead would be the Manfrotto 496 Compact, but the 492 would work and is a little less expensive.

What Paul Said... I have the Manfrotto, and would feel comfortable using it in a jousting match.... or dueling Darth Vader with his light sword...

Had a good look online in the UK, settled on the Manfrotto 681B as the slightly additional height could prove useful to me.

Ironically the discounted price of both the 480B and 481B is the same at the minute. Will be with me tomorrow, job done!

Thanks again
