After much research, mainly here, Manfrotto 055XPROB with the 498RC2 ball head and two extra QR plates are on the way. Current Manfrotto rebates will help as well :)

I can see a BlackRapid FastenR connector in my future as well :)

That ball head works very well for me. Like it a lot. You may find a little puff or two of powdered graphite will smooth out the action a little bit. Not required, but, yeah... Just a thought.

The panning ability pushed me to that model. Thanks for the tip.

i am thinking of this model too. not sure which head to get for the d7000, nikon 300 f4 and tc 14. will a ball head be steady enough for me?

The Manfrotto 498RC2 locks down tight as a drum. It laughs at my D7100 with moderately heavy lenses attached. Unless your needs are extreme I think you'll be fine.
