All of those old astronauts are some of the most special people there are IMO. Many are old and they are dying like Neil Armstrong. Sometime in the soon in the near future we are likely to hear of the passing of John Glenn. Many of their friends died doing what they did while they were doing it.
The closest thing we have to that today is not some uav Martian Rover it is the JPL control room and the team of folks who made the incredible happen. It is the cofounder of Paypal who started Space X (the other cofounder just sold tons of Facebook stock to the tune of a billion dollars...guess what he is involved in?
). Curiosity and SpaceX are very special in their own way but it is not the same as Mercury and Apollo.
