Amazon Ending Unlimited Storage Plans

With the discussions on backup strategies and cloud based storage, Amazon ending the unlimited plans may cause a need to rethink your plan. Similar to Google killing Nik, the big guys don't always put the customer first.

It doesn't sound like this impacts Prime users yet, but time will tell.

This is hardly a case of the big guys not always put the customer first, but more likely them realizing (like most other companies do) that unlimited plans don't pay the bills like they thought they would.

I'm still happy with my paid Backblaze setup :)

I'm a bit more pessimistic, given others have used this tactic in the past. My belief is that it was purely a play to get people signed up initially, knowing that it would produce a captive audience as it's hard to move large amounts of data to another service provider ... and so long as the new costs were competitive, a certain number of users would default to stay or to upgrade to Prime just to avoid moving data.

That said, I've just learned that there's a 6 month migration plan, so even if your original unlimited plan expired yesterday, you have 6 months to move your overage data to another service (or to upgrade your plan) before that overage data is deleted. That's above and beyond what's required, so that helps.
