It's not just a lens hood, it's a puzzle too for those rainy days.
Nikon constructed it in such a way, it'll keep you satisfied whatever the circumstances.
Does a lens hood need to be made in such a way that you have this many pieces when it falls apart.
My 55-300 lens hood.

Thats shocking, look at all that noise
Careful on the non Nikon hoods. I got one for my 70-200 and it's awful tight in some spots. Bean wanting to replace it with an original but keep putting it off. Some may say it's just a hood but if ever I want to sell the lens the last thing I want is for someone to think it was dropped or something and pass.

Mine fell apart, and I was able to super glue it back to working order. Fell apart again, glued it again, and looks like it will stick for a while, this time. Looks like crap. Yours looks like it was beyond repair. These things are expensive junk, and reflect badly on Nikon, IMO.
And I see Nikon wants a piddly little ol' $30 for a replacement... I was close; I was thinking $50.I have put it back together a couple of times when its partly disintegrated but this time it was just too far gone.

Random pop fly softball meteorite. Had the camera on the bleachers while I was digging in my bag for a different lens. What are the odds that it would get hit? Obviously, pretty good odds. (Needless to say, I learned that costly lesson, and my camera no longer leaves my neck/person when I am out. Period).
