New, but no longer confused...

Hello fellow Nikonites!

As you can probably tell, I'm new to this forum and to Nikon gear. And, I'm pretty new to photography. The last time I took pictures was with my old film Pentax ZX-30.

A little story if you dare to read on:
I've been using my Nikon D5100 now for a little while and was always wondering if I should've entered the Canon camp as I use their P&S and camcorder. On two occasions, I almost sold my gear to jump ship. Then, I went back to the camera store to play with the Canon bodies, and guess what, I couldn't jump ship. I don't know why, but I'm hooked on my D5100. So, I was confused for a while, but now I've seen the light. Nikon is just the right setup for me. I can't explain it. Any of you out there have similar experiences?

Welcome to the site. I had a similar experience, had a Canon P&S so checked out the Canon bodies first at a local shop. When I compared the Canon to a Nikon, the Nikon body and kit lens felt higher quality, thats what sold me.

Well I am old and still confused...BUT I had a Canon P&S and that is why I went Nikon for my DSLR (D3100) and my wife's Nikon P&S (CoolPix L120)

Referring to P&S camera, almost anyone worth his salt will tell you that Canon P&S cameras are one of the best on the market. If I was to buy a point and shoot camera, it would definitely be a Canon. I'll never stop shooting Nikon DSLR's, but Canon rules the P&S market, far as I'm concerned.

Once again I find myself siding with Jack. Canon P&S cameras are the absolute bomb, and I still recommend them to my friends and family looking for one.

My one and only reason for going to Nikon was that I found that Canon could not touch them in the high-end consumer to low-end pro range cameras. The D7000 was far superior to anything I found in the Canon portfolio, and I've since added a D600 to it after carefully considering that investment. To add a little bit of meat to my argument, my brother is a pro and shoots Canon, so my decision means that I have forsaken the opportunity to share lenses when we're out together, or buy his cast-offs when he moves on to something else. No small sacrifice I assure you. He reminds me of that often - but he's never told me I made a bad decision.

For the neighborhood you've moved into with your D5100, you'll be a happy camper for some time.

Jack and Jake, thanks for the responses. My little trusty Canon P&S has been a trooper, and it keeps on going despite having been abused like no other.
