Hello everyone. I recently won a Nikon D5200 in a raffle. I never thought anything of photography prior to winning this camera. In fact, I've never owned a camera before. Since a have it, though, I thought I would give it a try and see how I liked it, I could always sell it if it wasn't for me right?

Turns out I love it! I never fathomed how much fun this hobby could be, and now I'm addicted. I only have one lens so far, the 18-55mm lens that was included, but I plan on getting more in the future when I progress and can justify the expense.

i have had it for about a week and just took my first photographs today. I decided the night I received it that I would take the time to read about it rather than shoot away, so I spent four days researching the different aspects of photography. Of course I haven't scratched the surface, but for someone that has never owned a camera and never taken a picture other than on a cell phone, I must admit, I am quite please that I'm experimenting on manual mode.

Thanks everybody!

Welcome and I really admire your ability to hold back and do some research first. Sounds like you even read the manual!
Its a fantastic hobby and you have joined a fantastic bunch of people here.

These are the first two photographs I took that don't look like TOTAL garbage. Nothing fancy, just my apartment complex's entrance sign. One is of the sign in focus, the other is of the flowers. I wish I could get the reflection out of the black marble on the one where it is more obvious. Oh well, perfection doesn't come in 4 days.

EDIT: They seem to have lost some resolution by posting it on photo bucket. They look better on my computer from iPhoto.

You don't need to post from photo bucket. You can download straight from your computer. Just choose the "from your computer option. Your point of focus is interesting. Try centering on the flowers in front of the sign.

I cropped the image a touch and sharpened.

It's funny how I won this camera, it was at a private gun club as a sort of "gag" gift. The supposed "top" gift was a really expensive custom Beretta shotgun and when I won this the MC made the comment, "not what you wanted but hey at least you get to shoot something!"

They chuckled.

But now I get the last laugh...hahaha...

Guidelines to adding a photo to your post.

1. Resize photo to 1000px on the long side.
2. Resolution set to 72ppi (Pixels Per Inch)

These guidelines will be good for viewing on a computer but will not be good for printing. This will help safeguard your copyright.

wow, what a great entry into the hobby.... im jealous as hell!

if you are really hooked and are serious about getting into this hobby, then I strongly recommend joining a local club. This can save you hours of frustration, and getting away from automatic mode will open up all the doors for you.

Not used them too much myself, but maybe the use of a pol-filter on the lens would help get rid of the reflections in the sign. I am sure there is someone here with more experience than I who could comment on this.

Anyway, welcome to the forum from Austria!
