Hi Folks, I am just getting back into things , I am trying to get a D750 and a macro lens, I am thinking the Nikon 105mm f2.8G n vr for taking photos of jewellery and opal, and yes I am a jeweller ;). So what would be the way to go?
Thanks Greg

I've got the 105 D (non-vr). Works great with my D750.
Even a D7200 with that lens would do a fantastic job for jewelry.

A 105mm works well with the full frame sensor. Nikon and Sigma 105's are both well regarded. I've got the Sigma because it saved me some money. The only nit I have with it is that the VR works great but it's sort of loud and clunky. Doesn't impact the function and for your uses you'll likely be on a tripod with it switched off. Tack sharp, but so is the Nikon.

I'm on a budget and bought a used Tokina ATX Pro 100mm f.2.8 Macro. It is every bit as good as its reputation. But if I had the extra money, I definitely would have chosen the Nikkor you're interested in.

I have the D750 and the Nikon 105 f/2.8 VR lens. It's a great combo. :encouragement:

Like BackdoorArts mentioned, you will probably want to use a tripod to keep it steady. You might also want to consider a macro rail to fine tune such a shallow depth of field. Mine is an Oben MFR4-5 Macro Focusing Rail (but it's more expensive than other decent rails). I think some people here use a Cowboy Studio macro rail. A four-way rail gives you full control of front-to-back as well as side-to-side micro adjustments. Two-way rails only go front-to-back. It looks like Neewer makes one although I don't know anyone who has tried it.

Just something to think about if you find you need more precise focusing. It gets attached to a tripod in case you've never heard of one.
