this was taken from the back garden tonight 2/1/17

Mars at the top, Moon, and Venus - to the naked eye mars is a little larger and flickering white/red

so back out into the freezing cold, the moon has left the sky and its been replaced by Orion and the Nebula and Pleiades

Some time when Orion is high enough in the sky, follow the line that is indicated by the belt (the three stars in the middle) to the left, for some distance, and you'll see a star that is brighter than the others. Outside of our own Solar System, it is the brightest thing in the sky, as seen from Earth.

It's important that you never make jokes about that star. It's Sirius.
