Aspect ratio and printing

I've found this to be a bit annoying. Most of my older shots follow the standard digital format of 6x9 and as a photographer I always try to fill the frame. From that ratio, I need 8x12, 12x18, or 16x24 frames, mostly more expensive and harder to find than the old 8x10, 11x14, 16x20 ect. On top of that, the printing cost is higher than the old formats. So now I'm trying to get back into the 8x10 ratio to reduce printing costs and so customers can find frames. Anyone else experiencing this?

It seems the printing and framing world has not caught up with the sensor ratio.

I'm trying to build up stock to do some shows next year. Looking at an 11x14 as an example:

On sale, I can have them printed by nations for under $2 and sell at a huge profit.

With the 6x9 format, my choices for a similar size is 8x12 (much smaller) at a printing cost of $4 (never on sale). The next size up is 12x18, about $9 to print (never on sale) and frames cost much more.

So I find myself wanting to squeeze shots into 11x14. I have since changed my shooting to allow more flexibility, but I really don't like wasting pixels!

This is why God (or some other creative soul) invented mattes. You can turn any size photo into the next frame size up with matting.

That and a nice matte almost always makes a print look better. I have also found that the 9 X 13 and 11 X 17 frames are getting pretty easy to come by. Both of those are pretty close to full frame.

Good suggestions on the framing side, but..., the printing cost makes these sizes much less profitable.

Along these lines.., I wish the electronic grid in the viewfinder could be changed to different ratios!

With the larger pixel count, I am trying to frame with room around the shot, and then depending on the print size, crop/adjust for the medium.

For some shots, a bit of stretch if the distortion does not harm the composition. but try to avoid the too tight crop case and then not being able to choose the print size.

I stick to 11x14 or 13x19 mostly...but..often just have the matte custom cut to fit the image, but still use standard frames to save cost.
