i have decided to get a refurbished 300s from Nikon. 700 was a bit over budget for me. i have a manual 24mm,28mm, 50mm, a 70-300 tamron and my kit lenses 18-55 and and 55-200. a 3rd party flash that works great. what i need to know is im wondering what would be a good combo within my budget. spending about half on my camera i still want a flash that is triggered by remote and at least 2 prime lenses to go with them. I am comfortable using the manual lenses. so im looking at 60mm and 85mm or even sell my 50mm for an af-s one.

what would be your combo. I will be ordering in the next 2 weeks.

You will enjoy the D300S, I sure have enjoyed mine. If you can afford the 18x200, I really like this lens, it pretty well stays on my D300S. As near a perfect lens as you will find.

Since your kit lenses cover the bases I would buy a 85/1.8 and/or the classic 105/2.5 to round out the manual lens kit. Congratulations on the 300s. I wish I would have had the budget to get the 300s (or the 700 for that matter) mainly because of the metal body. They are pretty neat.

Congratulations on the D300s! Its truly a great workhorse of a camera, I won't part with mine.
I also have the 18-200 3.5-5.6 lens & its a very good all around lens. I also have the 35mm f1.8 which I bought for $205 including tax & let me tell you since I have it I use it 50% of the time it works that good for my needs. I also use my old manual focus lenses from the film camera days & they also work very well with the D300s.And by the way I still use my old sb10 & sb 11 flashes from yesteryear with equally good results.!!
Again lots of luck with the new addition.!!

I also am thinking of a new telephoto lens with an f stop of 2. or lower, it seems that my old mf lenses when mounted on the d300s have that added 1.5 crop factor so my 50mm f1.2 is a 75mm f1.2 & my 105 mm f2.5 is a 157.5 mm lens so I don't need the newer lenses unless I want auto focus, recently I used my old series E 70-200mm zoom lens & the crop factor came in very handy, I shot across a football field & took a shot of a soccer game on the next field with good results, it was a 350mm shot that came out very clear. My point is don't be too quick to give up the old manual focus lenses because on the d300s they're fantastic unless you have a specific need.!!

My reccomendation is this
Get the D300s and SB-700 & then I would suggest the 50mm f/1.8 along with the 70-300mm VR ED lens. Both work great on the D300. I also love the 35mm f/1.8. The next glass I would get is going to be 70-200 f/2.8 or 200-400mm f/4
