Have fun with it. Looking forward to some images.
p.s. I love your Cosmos quote. Is it yours or did someone else say it?
Thanks. It is my own little philosophy based on Carl Sagan's 'star stuff.'
Yeah, the manual is huge, and there are so many things to customize on the D500. I can't remember how I customized my buttons.
I don't know if you are familiar with Steve Perry's Backcountry Gallery, but he has great information on the D500. One thing to be aware of is that Nikon changed the tracking capabilities some. People have noticed (not me) that the dynamic AF modes operate differently on this model. He has an e-book on the focusing system.
Yes I love watching Steve Perry videos.
I have already programmed some of the functions but find that people seem to be split on the best AF selection for tracking birds and wildlife. I am getting the impression that there is a slight preference for GROUP AF.
It would be interesting to know what people on here tend to use in this scenario.

Group Af on the AFon Button and single point on the press of the joystick is the way to go! Congrats!!!
Congratulations on the new toy. So were are all the pics?
Love the D500 but BIF is really tricky.
Are you using AF-C?
