Will the either of these TC's work with the AF-S VR 70-300 f/4.5-5.6 IF-ED lens? This combination is not listed on the Nikon compatibility chart that I looked at.

the TC-14 is not on the approved list for that lens. AF-S Teleconverter TC-14E II from Nikon

same for the TC-17 AF-S Teleconverter TC-17E II from Nikon

I ended up buying a 3rd party for mine.

What did you buy Don?

The wife, who has little wrist and arm strength, is using this lens on the D5300 finding it close to the weight limit she can comfortably handle. I'm looking to increase her "reach" for wildlife without adding any significant weight and I thought the TC would be the answer.

The only way i can think of getting reach with out adding weight is via crop factor of a series 1 and FT-1 the 70-300 would crop to a 189-810 mm,but that does have its down side, difficult to get moving subjects, nearly impossible to get BIF,and not all that much scope for cropping in post.

As you probably know i use a bridge camera when this old body of mine doesn't want to lug the heavy gear around, you get the reach then but its best used for small birds not too far away and action shots are out.

The obvious answer is the new Nikon 300pf and 1.4 but at what cost:D

I just bought a low cost one to see how I liked it, Teleplus PRO 300 DGX 1.4x AF

Not the best quality but it does work. I need to put it back on and find tune it and see if I like it better

My advice would be shoot at 280 and crop. Mine gives decent results with this strategy. TC will degrade too much and turn an already slow lens into a slower one.

Mine tends to be a tad soft at 300, I hear this is typical.
