Hi guys!

I just recently acquired a slightly used D5000 with the 18-55mm lens that comes with the camera. The auto focus on the lens is broke so I have to manually focus anytime I use the camera. Would it be better to get the lens fixed at a repair shop or just buy a new lens. This is my first DSLR camera so I'm still very new on how to use it and all the different types of lenses, filters etc. Thanks for the help!

Are you sure it's broken? Did you switch to manual focus by accident on either your lens or your camera?

Before you go out and buy another lens, I'd find a friend with a Nikon and test your lens on his camera. It could be the camera itself that is broken or does not focus.

I'm starting to wonder if the person I bought this camera from really knew anything about it. They didnt own it for very long. I made sure to pull everything apart and cleaned it up. If I use the view finder it doesn't make any noise and will actually auto focus. Its when i use the screen that it takes it a while to auto focus and makes the noise but it can auto focus.

We,ll Welcome to Nikonites, Greyhound0822. I know a few weeks ago. I had my mistake hit the AF/MF to MF. And was shooting and then looking at photos they were out of focus. Thought it was broken. So check to see if that is what happened to you.

Ah, the cat's out of the bag. LiveView focus operation is different than the viewfinder focus. I've so rarely used the LiveView (except for tripod shots where the focus had to be critical) that I'll suggest you read the manual and learn how it does work. If it does focus when using the camera in a normal way (Through the lens and viewfinder), then it's working. There are many menus selections that could affect the way the focus works in LV. Best of luck and welcome to Nikonites.
