Hi Guys,

I just bought a new lens a nikkor 18-200 VR2. It's brand new, got it today!

Now, I immediately noticed a "problem" with the auto focus sound. I attached a video, please have a look at it.

Here is my summary:

VR is OFF
body is a D5100 (almost brand new)

You only hear the grinding sound when it's in LiveView. When LV is off, you don't hear it.

The sound starts from 70mm all the way up to 200mm. YOu start hearing it when it's almost unable to autofocus.

THe movie first starts in viewfinder, after a while you hear a click, that's when i switch to LV and then you hear the sound when it's autofocussing.

Should I return it back or is this normal?

That doesn't sound normal when it hunts from .5 meters up to 1 meter. I don't own that lens so I can't compare. But to me that doesn't sound normal. Almost like it strains to get above the minimum focus distance. Does that lens have 2 focus modes (infinity to 1 meter and one for full infinity to minimum focusing distance)?

I have the VR version of that lens.

It tends to hunt around a bit, but it doesn't make that noise - even in Live View. Mine is very quite - you can hear the AF but barely.

Sounds like you have some grinding going on in there. I would return it.

thanks guys. i will get back to the store tomorrow. HOpefully I will not end up like one of the comments in a similar youtube clip (see last comment all the way down):

"My 18-200 VR2 is doing exactly the same noise. I tested 3 18-200 VR2 in the store and they produce same noise as well. Looks like this is the way it works.
"

came back from the store today. the picked a new d5100 body and a brand new 18-200 lens making exactly the same noise using liveview.

I went back home with the same lens. I hoped for a different result, but unfortunately the sound is probably normal when using liveview.

Isn't there anybody here using the same 18-200 VR2 Nikkor who can try and do a max zoom with liveview and autofocus?
