I just ordered this lens.. quite kicked about it :)
I contemplated hard between this and the Sigma 105mm & 150mm, but just decided to stay with Nikon.
Do not have any other brand lens yet, so did not want to chance it with the 105 :)
Cost me $820 approximately
I will possibly be getting a ring flash unit like the R1C1 or just the R1 as well, down the line.

Any suggestion on other things that would be good to get for macro photography is welcome.

Now am not going to be able to get my eyes off the clock waiting for this beauty to be delivered!

I have the Sigma 150 with OS and the Nikon 105 D. I love both but use them for different purposes. The 105 is smaller and lighter and great for travel. The Sigma is a killer lens but bigger and heavier and is my go to macro for local and car trip shooting as well as a head shot portrait lens. I also have the R1 and like it very much.

I'm assuming you have a good tripod to use. Focus rails are nice to have. I got two cheap rails off of ebay, having two rails gives you x-y control. I'm sure they are not as smooth as more pricey rails, but they do the job.

Thanks Nick... I have a Manfrotto 055XproB tripod.
but i am wondering if i should get a min tripod specifically for macro..
Any recommendations on the rails? looked at ebay, too many options & a lack of knowledge about them doesn't make it easy :p

You will absolutely love it. I thought it took a bit longer to get used to than other lenses, but it has turned into one of my favorites.

Awesome. I am happy with you and I can't wait seeing pics and your infos about the lens. In my mind deep inside it is on my buying-list as well as flashes. Never used flesh only long times ago when I was shooting Auto the Camera flash popped up. LOL

I bought two of the rails that say 'Fotomate' on them. There are several vendors selling them direct from China, I don't remember which one I bought from. I think I paid $12 each with free shipping. It was not clear to me if some of the x-y rails I saw could be separated, so I went with two separate rails and the seller made it clear that they could be stacked. I really didn't know much about them and wasn't sure if I needed side to side adjustment. Glad I got two, it helps and sometimes I can get by with one. They are not silky smooth like a fine micrometer, but I have no trouble focusing. The weather here has been a real disappointment this year and I have not had any time to play with them outdoors. Enjoy the lens! I'm jealous, I have the Tamron 60mm macro.

You will absolutley love this lense. If you haven't shot macro before, it takes a bit of getting used to. I use a 1.7 nikon teleconverter with mine, so getting even further away from the subjects is pretty handy. When I first started shooting, I was suprised how close I still had to get with the 105mm. I wish Nikon would come out with something longer.
But I still love this lense.

I was about to ask where you found one. Had one been available anywhere I may have gone with that before setting my mind (not settling on, mind you) the Sigma. I would love to do a comparison some time. It's a beautiful day in NJ today and I hope to start playing with it once I get my indoor work done.

Looking forward to seeing your shots with it.
