Nikon Coolpix A or ?

I've had my eye on the Coolpix A for a while, even passed on the recent $299 refurb specials earlier this summer.

Took my D7100, grip, SB700 to my sons small bday party at a local movie theater today. Just too much, time to pick something up.

Looks like the Coolpix A is discontinued, I'll keep watching for refurb deals.

What else is out there? Looking for similar size, RAW format and a hotshoe is 75% important. Sub $400 if possible.

To those who have had a camera of this genre, did a fix focal length hinder you for general daily carry use?

Should I consider a variable focal length/zoom?

Olympus TG-3
Coolpix S9900 (No Raw)
Canon?
Sony?

It is something you have to try yourself. Just fix your standard zoom on your D7100 at 18mm and keep it there during your next shoot outing. I already had the ricoh GRD III and knew I liked the 28mm FF equivalent focal length. I really like the Coolpix and carry it in a small bag with the SB400 and a few filters. Main limitation is autofocus speed.

You should definitely consider the Nikon P7001. Shoots in RAW but not NEF; it uses NRW a different Nikon-proprietary RAW format. I don't know what software you use to post process your RAW files but RAW compatibility with whatever software you DO use is something you should look into regardless of what camera you consider.

Thank you Mike - I've seen that. Looking for a black one.

Good info. I use Lightroom exclusively. I'll take a look at the P7001.

Haaa. I couldn't find much on it online, thought it was some EU only thing lol
Turns out I only found sites where they typo'd the name :)

OK, so after considering a used P7100 and looking at the S9900 (weighed how much I wanted RAW & hot shoe against actually needing it), I called Nikon USA about the Silver refurb A being $100 less than the Black version. They told me that was an error, lowered the price of the black version to $350 to match the silver and I placed an order.

Thanks for the suggestions. I think I'll be very happy with the selection!
