Zack Arias announced his new site and video today, DEDPXL OneLight 2.0.

DEDPXL | More Signal. Less Noise.

Check it out :)

A full time commercial and editorial photographer, Zack shoots everything from bands to CEOs to ad campaigns. A gifted teacher and communicator, he has an uncanny ability to meet and connect with all types of people. He and his wife, Meghan, have four boys ranging in age from four to fifteen. Zack once lived in a VW bus for six months driving around the United States. Still an avid traveler, Zack has been all around the world (a couple times) including India, Dubai, Cuba, Italy, Hong Kong and Turkey, but somehow has never been to North Dakota. You can view his portfolio here.

In all honestly Carl was dreamed up a few years ago when we were making our family Christmas card. We added a squirrel playing a banjo to our family picture and we lovingly dubbed him — Carl. However, he didn’t actually exist in real life. Then, one day, while walking through an antique store Zack looked up and lo and behold! There was Carl, in the flesh, in all his nut holding glory. He has become our mascot and we think he is freakin’ hilarious. It’s too bad he only has one nut to hold.

Meghan has had some truly great experiences in her life but none of them have involved the licensing of barbie dolls for Amish children. If you were to ask if she was donating etch-a-sketches with no outside help to overly intellectual prairie-dogs she would shrug and say, “Sadly – no.” However, she was lucky enough to have procured some freckles at an early age on her left thigh that resemble the Big Dipper constellation. She has also won two cricket spitting competitions and has a fondness for coming up with her own meanings for random acronyms. Happily she got to marry her best friend, Zack, a man she likes very very much. The fact that she has had the opportunity to record a few albums and traverse the U.S. and Canada performing her original music is something for which she is enormously grateful. Currently she plays from time to time with a band called Quiet Hounds and spends a good amount of her time raising her children of whom she is enormously proud and sometimes irritated with which is why there is wine.

Just wanted to bring this back to the top of the stack and thank Joe for bringing this to my attention. While I didn't participate in the assignment during the first month (it wasn't on my radar, though it seems I had some shots that would have fit just nicely), I am participating this time around, and will likely do so moving forward.

Zack is one of those guys that can be a bit polarizing, and many love him or hate him. I happen to be in the camp that manages to appreciate him for most of what he has to say, and can ignore the rest. What I like is that he seems to be taking the time to go through and talk about the images submitted, and provide in many cases some constructive feedback (and in other cases, not so much).

Assignment 2 is set to finish at the end of the week, so you have time to get in. Even if you don't want to participate actively, I found that in watching the assignment and critique videos for Assignment 1, I was able to see a lot in others' photos that mirrors what I might have done, and in that, gained some insight into how I may not have been pursuing a photo as intently as I possibly should have.

Anyway, if DEDPXL isn't on your radar, but you like the idea of purposed shooting, this can give you a nice companion or alternative to the monthly assignments here.

Well, I've got to say my excitement for this site has waned greatly. After two months of getting folks excited, getting too busy and not following through on critiques and new challenges is a sure way to fall off of peoples' radar. Yawn.

I've read his new book and purchased OneLight 2.0...and both were solid investments.

I don't really look for Dedpxl to be updated on a regular basis at this point. Zack is kind of a busy dude.

Oh, I know, which is why I was surprised when he started the monthly challenge things and was, BAM!!, right on it afterwards. I suspect he knows he's in over his head with making this monthly, but just hasn't said anything yet.

I'm enjoying the videos, but can understand having a great idea then getting overwhelmed with the tedium involved. Maybe he'll learn and get his workflow down and/or drop it to quarterly or something. Have enjoyed what's been done so far, though, and that article on Cuba got me fired up for the "art" again, in the sense that I no longer whine about what equipment I need to get the perfect shot.

If that's all I ever get out of DEDPXL, I'm changed for the better. The rest is just gravy!

Dammit - watched all 3 long segments, and having submitted 5 images I have to say that I'm a little bummed that none of them got critiqued. I get it, given that there were thousands, but I thought I had one or two that were worth taking about, good or bad.
