Z30 Field monitor issues. won't shoot video

I have a Z30 and I mainly use it to film my kid's sports. tricky learning curve but I'm getting there. the biggest issue was seeing what I an taping so I bought 2 different field monitors that talked about using it for video.
When I plug it in and turn it on it works fine. As soon as i select video it blanks and says "No signal". i hit the playback button and the screen comes on. Both monitors i tried have great reviews and I think it's a camera capability or setting.
Does anyone use a field monitor while shooting video?
