On that church shot, I just use the brush to up the exposure in the shadows, then used it to add contrast and clarity as well as lessen the exposure by about .4 in the sky. I can't bring out the detail in the really dark shadows too much because it just makes a mess of the quality in that area, but I don't do it that much anyway.
