I'm terrible at estimating distances, but basically I just get as close as I can. If I am patient the bird may come to me rather than me approaching it. Usually I just move slowly, indirectly, and without looking right at the bird. Also, as far as getting a sharp shot, I use the highest shutter speed that seems reasonable in the given lighting conditions.The background is overcast sky, and I had to process these shots to bring up the exposure on the bird and lower the brightness of the sky.</blockquote>
