I question why you are seeing banner ads. Do you stay logged into your account?

That's strange. Also I would not click on any banner that says "download this".
If you want to upgrade to 8.1, try doing it through Windows Update.

Control panel-System and security-Windows update-check for updates.

Never click on anything, especially a banner ad. Chances are, you'll bring in a trojan horse and then who know what will happen.

If you want to update from W8 to W8.1, go directly to the Microsoft site and go from there.

Take a screenshot. There shouldn't be a banner. That sounds to me like spam from some sort of browser extension or toolbar.

The update from Windows 8 to 8.1 is handled through Windows Update, and unless you've changed settings in how updates are installed, will happen automatically.

Have you checked to see what programs are listed at start-up (msconfig)? That might help to identify the culprit so you can remove the program. Here's info from Microsoft's web site about upgrading from Windows 8 to 8.1

Update to Windows 8.1 from Windows 8 - Microsoft Windows

Thanks, had a quick look and found two likley problemsw, first i checked my auto update and found one important update that hadn't installed and Mcafee was turned on when i tried last time.will give it a serious read later.

this is in fact the update that windows 8 has, it adds back a sort of start menu, and they claim it largely un-breaks windows 8, however, i tried it, and it rendered my computer near unusable, well over 50% of the programs i tried to use, that worked on windows 8, no longer worked on 8.1. i would personally avoid this update like the plague it is, in order to remove it, i had to do a factory restore, and even that nearly got screwed up because one part of 8.1 update is, it adds 8.1 to your factory backups thus making it where you cannot go back to windows 8. thankfully i spotted that setting and told it no or i would have been screwed.

sadly there really isnt a way to get it to go away, after the first time that it tries to download it should give you a new option one of those being to do it later, or skip it, something like that, and about twice a month it will ask again, and you should be able to just skip or tell it later.

now i will admit that i play games, and largely none of them worked, so my over 50% program failure did include that, but it also had photo editing software that would run in 8 even if it had to be ran in compatibility mode, that would not run in 8.1 for anything.

your experience might vary, and you might really like it, personally i wont upgrade to 8.1 again, and use start 8 and modern mix to restore a windows 7 feel to 8 making it far more user friendly.

If this is a call to update to Windows 8.1 then you need to have all the 8.0 updates installed before you can move to 8.1. My first weekend with 8 was horrendous until I updated. Windows popping up right, left and centre.

For anyone who has inadvertently opened a Windows app, especially on a laptop, and finds it keeps opening every time you move the cursor, you need to move to the top left hand corner, return to the desktop and then right-click on the small app window and click on "close".

I'd still love to know what idiot decided to install the "return to desktop" just below the "scroll bar down arrow" on the right hand side. It's a total nightmare when scrolling quickly through several pages.

Someone who doesn't use their mouse much???? It's Windows, what else would you expect. Typed from my MacBook Pro. :)

Sorry, I could not resist. I have to use Windows 7 at work on my work laptop. I actually don't mind it. Now, Windows 8, which they have in the computer lab for the kids, that just sucks as far as I am concerned.
