Will this work on my Z30?

Hey! I was thinking about getting the Sigma 120-400mm and using it with my Z30 (and the first FTZ). I keep seeing some people say it will work, and some say it won't. I was wondering if some has the answer/experience whit that setup?

I could not say with certainty. Z30 bodies don't show in the discussion here as often as a Z50 or better.

What I can share is that the specifications all indicate it should work. But the wildcard here is 3rd party lens from 15 years ago or more. I tried to use a Tamron 90mm F-mount (the most current 070 version) on my Z5 with FTZ-II adapter and discovered it did not work right at all. Autofocus and other errors. I googled after the fact to find notice from Tamron that there is an issue with using on a Z-mount Nikon and it would have required a replacement of a circuit board. So I had to continue using that lens on my older D750 until I finally replaced it with a Nikon Z 105mm macro lens.

So the only way to find out is to test it.

Since you haven't purchased it yet, I would suggest looking for something a little newer.

What are you looking to shot with it?

I'm working on a budget, that's why I'm looking at this lens in particular. I'm mostly going to be doing aviation photography where I need a really large zoom like this one.

I understand having to stay within your means. Keep in mind that since you are working with a crop frame body, a 400mm lens will give you the reach of a 600mm lens on a full frame body.

I see that MPB has some Sigma 100-400 for sale for around $500. This is a much newer lens and is listed by this source as compatible with the FTZ without issue. I don't know anything else about this lens.

I'm looking at that lens. But I want to make sure I'm getting top image quality for what I'm paying 👍

I am not sure I would have the talent to track moving aircraft zoomed in to 400mm (600mm with the crop factor) just looking with the viewscreen. It is hard enough to do when you can use a viewfinder and track along with head movement. I would need a tripod and gimbal head.
