Wasn't sure in which subforum to post this....

I just read this information in the February 2015 issue of Popular Photography magazine (page 16). Has anyone heard of this file format? What are your thoughts?

JPEG KILLER?

With the the JPEG image file format now more than 22 years old, French programmer Fabrice Bellard has developed a new format called Better Portable Graphics (BPG) that he hopes can replace it. Based on part of the HEVC video compression standard, BPG promises 14-bit color, a higher compression ratio, the same color space support as JPEG, and a lossless compression option.

Beta was supposed to be better than VHS. And VideoDiscs were supposed to replace both.

And iTunes replaced them all. :)

I started seeing the BPG articles in mid-December, but other than articles I haven't seen any actual support for it. This reminds me of the "scare" in the 90's (? maybe early 2000) that CompuServe was going to sue everyone over JPG and we needed to switch everything to PNG. Time will tell, and there needs to be a compelling reason for people to change. Who's updating their website first? :)

The JPG 2000 (.JPG2) format came out in the year 2000 as a revision to the standard .JPG file format and it really is a significantly better format but I don't see it being used, which is shame. Maybe .BPG will do better; it's definitely time we moved away from .JPG as it stands now.

Just think how many million cameras and mobile phones are out there that output jpegs, they can't / won't all be converted.
Also how many browsers support it ? and biggest of all how many websites ?

It first has to be accepted by the worlds standard bodies and even then as @RocketCowboy says there has to be a compelling reason.

There have been lots of proposals to change things but never underestimate how slow something like this happens these days.
There is so much invested in keeping things the same.

One thing for certain it won't happen overnight so don't panic ;)

No chance of it happening at all if there is any royalty involved.

We really don't need smaller files .. we need better quality files. JPEG originated back in the dial up modem days, when a 25 KB image was a big deal. Today, a large image is not much problem for broadband, or for our 2000 GB disk drives either.
