Message: <blockquote data-quote="stmv" data-source="post: 795722" data-attributes="member: 10038">oops,  days seeming to be blurring together,, going so fast.well, I got to really compare my 80-400 VR Nikkor ED lens to my nephews 80-400 VR AFS version ,,first,, wow!  has it grown in size, I mean it went from an amazingly compact zoom, well to a monster zoom. and I guess the newer one ghosts, because they added this huge lens hood,, making it even more extended,makes his D7000 look tiny. now why the explosion in size, well because this is a G version with the focus in the lens, and maybe the improvementin focus speeds and such made it really grow quite a bit.  is it sharper,,  I don't know, I did a side by side shot, zoomed in, can't tell the difference, maybe its a hair sharper, butnot enough to justify the 2300 more dollars. where is it better, well,, two areas, faster focus, and I do like the AFS feature of just grabbing the focus ring and finetuning, Mine, I have to move the switch which can be a pain which would I prefer,...... ok,, mine,, because I love that my lens is reasonable in size, and I carry all the time, and switcharound, I can carry for quite a bit by hand, and don't tire, and it does not look silly large on my D800. Don't get me wrong, the new version is really nice, but for 2800 dollars,, naw,, I would take the 600 dollar older versionand buy something else with the 2200 dollars. for my nephew,  I understand, he does sports photography and needs the quick focus..  and maybe the lens is sharper,and he does not mind the huge lens, or maybe he even likes the image of the photographer with the huge tele on the side lines, but for me, I'll stick with the smaller older version that I can take everywhere, and I suppose every once in a whilemiss a shot due to focus speeds.</blockquote>
