[QUOTE="stmv, post: 795766, member: 10038"] package is opened,, and the rental has begun,, D810! 14 days of testing/fun ok, first impression,, (coming from a D800 owner), really really same layout,, only the change that I can find is the elimination of the write back led, to a new info button. and a new write back brighter LED to the right of the lower info button, and then three separate tabs for the ports on the side, instead of a single flap. but overall, the two bodies are so identical that really same. Also an additional info button has been added for even more mental overload of information.. laughs, I shoot manual thru the lens 95% of the time. using the LV on special shots, or to dial in water fall shots on the tripod. Oh, speaking of viewfinder, Nikon has switched from green LED lettering to white... which is brighter, and more easier to read, so, I would put this in the plus category over previous generations. Very very readable,, and since I shoot manual so often, being able to read with no strain is a value. The first thing I do,, is switch back the light meter,, Cntl F12, why Nikon changed this I have no clue, but easy to change back. I am just trained,, less light rotate left, etc, I also change the point focus from 12 to 8,, I like very specific control on that, and third, programming the funtion button for manual lens assignment. Could change more, but those are the minimum for me. ok,, set up done,, now,, click click click, and ... yes! a significant drop in noise. side by side, amazing drop in loudness. Still has the SLR distinct mirror and then shutter sound, but so so reduced.. laughs, the old 800 now sounds like a mechanical monster. When you select silent mode, it is even more quiet, but frankly, the shutter is so quiet, no need for that mode. Even the D800 silent mode is still loud, compared to the normal 810 shutter. I have to admit,, shooting in burst mode, and being so quiet is very nice. Will make a difference inside. in settings where noise is an issue. Any user of any Nikon since the D70 will feel totally comfortable using this 810 from an egomaniacs view. the 810 having the ever so light deeper right hand indent.. I never had any issue with the D800 depth, so find this of no value personally. Maybe people with huge hands, but for most,, won't even tell the difference. so,, from a first open, nothing negative to report from a touchy feely point of view, nothing major, just typical Nikon small incremental evolution changes. I can switch from camera to camera, and most of the time, don't even pay attention to the difference. If you are a 800 user, then essentially identical. so,, first vote: Shutter sound significantly improved! and still capable of 1/8000th of a second! so,, must still be pretty tough mechanism. next phase, picture taking!! so stay tuned as i give this D810 a personal go over.
