My trusty 35-70 2.8 is finnally starting to have issues. Sometimes in auto focus, it tends to hunt way more than it used to, or even fail to focus in the extreme (laughs,, not like 70 is extreme),, and I have to switch it to manual focus to use the lens reliable.
Which is ok, doing landscapes, but sometimes you just like autofocus,,
So,, I was thinking of buying a cleaner copy,, and or upgrading,, to of course the 24-70,, even thought that is such a larger lens (I don't particulary like bulky lens),
but,, the tax man bill was too large this year,, so no major lens purchase for a while.
and then......
I remembered that I had a 24-85 3.5 ED lens. sweet... put it on the D800,, and perfect.
This is actually a pretty sharp zoom, decent details, and best of all,, not a bulky lens at all.
Best of all, it covers the range perfectly, extending my old 35-70 out,, and actually provides
nice overlap to my 20-35.
Is it as fast as my 35-70, no,, but I am going to use this lens in the bright light,, and I tend to hover between f 5.6 to F11 when outdoors for maximum sharpness.
Indoors,, I would be swapping to either the 20-35 2.8,, and or a prime such as the
50 mm 1.8 or 1.4 which well, solves the lower light issue even better than if I had the bulky 24-70.
I know they have updated the 24-85 now to include VR, so an even sweeter lens.
is it as well built as the 35-70,, no,, but works!
oh,, and the focus is very fast, and being an AF-S,, you can adjust the focus even after the auto is done, That is one feature I really like, such a pain, when the autofocus fails, and you have to take the eye off the subject to switch over to manual focus. much better to just be able to tune in manually whenever you want too.
