Why can't Windows Explorer show thumbnails of my DNG's on my Windows 8.1 64bit Pc?

Has anybody else encountered the same problem?

I assume is has something to do with not having the DNG codec. However, on Adobe's website it says their DNG codec only works on Windows 7. Any ideas?

P.s Yes i did convert my Nef's to DNG's. I'm beginning to wonder if i did the right thing!

If Adobe hasn't released the required .dng codec for Windows 8, and the Windows 7 codec won't work in it's place, you really don't have any choice but to be patient and wait until Adobe does release the required Win8 codec.

I would suggest you download from Nikon, ViewNX2, and you will be able to view your NEFs on a windows PC. I am not sure if DNGs will show on ViewNX2. The solution might be not to convert your NEFs to DNGs. I do not convert to DNGs, and am using Lightroom 4.4.

Can i ask what your reasons for not converting are?

If Adobe stays in business for a long time, DNGs are OK, but if they don’t, how does one convert a DNG back to NEF? As long as Adobe’s Software will accept NEF or JPEGs, there is no reason to convert and lose your original NEF file. On the other hand, how long will Nikon stay in business? Adobe has pushed this DNG format, but most of the major camera producers are somewhat reluctant to switch to the Adobe DNG format.

Thanks for the links for the codecs. I've tried installing Adobe's version (the Win 7), and it seems to work ok on my Win 8 Pc (so far, lol).

I'm interested in a discussion about Nef's vs DNG's. I'll have to see if there's anything here on Nikonites about it (if not then perhaps I'll create one).
