This has been updated to include a feature chart of some of the most popular flash models used with Nikons.

I was confused about the Yongnou models. Apparently both the YN-565 and YN-568 support working as a wireless remote with a Nikon commander. The 568 only adds HSS support, but the 565 is only $107, which is 1/3 the SB-700 price.

News to me the SB-400 has been discontinued and that makes me sad; it's a dandy little flash.

I can only assume Nikon couldn't figure how to charge $500 for it...

I may have jumped the gun a bit. Nikonusa has not removed the SB-400, but B&H has, says Discontinued. There is a SB-300 now, less power and higher price.

It really gets my attention that the Yongnuo YN-565EX appears to run circles around the SB-700, for 1/3 the price. It does not have a commander or HSS (nor do the D3100 and D5100 families), but otherwise, it has more power and more features.

Yongnuo has been a solid performer for me. And they just keep getting better.
