ive just part ex'd my D60 for D5100, here are the first few shots ive taken with it. So far im happy with the camera and glad I upgraded it.
Taken with sigma 10-20 and ND4 grad filter, although I think I could have do with a stronger gradient.

A stronger grad would definitely have helped with the blown out sky. With out knowing what settings were used I cannot offer any more feedback though.

I do like your idea, never thought of doing that with an ultra wide, great experiment.
I prefer the second picture, I find the tree gives the picture more structure.

A bit more blue would have been nice, knowing myself I guess it was asking a lot of patience though to get nature to do this?
Looking at the rule of thirds, I wonder if 1/3 grain and 2/3 sky is not more pleasing for the eye. On the other hand, break the rules, that gives original results, I would even try the camera at an angle once. The basic ingredients in the photos make it really charming.
