Zoom lenses that go over 300mm tend to be big and pricey. I use an af 80-400 Nikkor lens but I use Nikon's bodies with a built in focus motor that will AF with lenses your D3300 can't. If I were you I'd upgrade to a D7100 or something that has the focus motor, so you can use the less pricey AF-D lenses better! :)

Welcome to the forum, the cheapest zoom that may fit your bill is the sigma 120-400,it gets mixed reviews and may only be available second hand,i had one and its not too bad for the money.

A couple of shots with it.

Another suggestion depending on budget, would be a Sigma 150-500, they come in at a good price second-hand since the 150-600's came out.

Oh, and welcome to the forum!

I recently hired the "Bigma" (aka Sigma/N 50-500m g/4.5-6.3 APO DH OS HSM) for a trip to Spain to shoot the F1 cars ...

I also use a D3300 at the moment, are you taking into account the Crop Sensor factor when looking at lenses?

The Sigma 50-500mm will also auto-focus on the D3300 (if memory serves!). But with all the big lenses, it might feel a little unbalanced

Indeed it does

I was using it on a Monopod and that was connected to the Tripod Collar on the lens so it didnt feel unbalanced on that, although when you are hand holding it is a bit of a beast and a lot bigger than a 70-300, I did some hand holding but not too much !!

I always think about the hand holding aspect as that's what i do 95% of the time, so I forgot about mono/tripods. That said, i didn't find it too bad to hand hold tbh
