A UV or clear filter is really a good idea.  It helps protect your lens.  Replacing a filter will not hurt your wallet as much as having to replace a lens.  Do get a good qualilty filter, though.  I have used Hoya, B&W, and Nikon filters for years without any image degradation.  If you get a cheap, poor quality filter, it will affect the images your lens takes.  Don't forget, the light must pass through the filter, too, not just the lens.  Go out and have fun with your camera!!</blockquote>
