If you expose for the sunlit planet, it will be approximately F16 at 1/100 sec at ISO 100. The EXIF data I looked at for the one with the crescent earth and the moon in the foreground was taken at 1/1000 sec, F8 and ISO 400, which is very close to the sunny 16 rule. No way that kind of exposure is going to be able to show the stars. The one that had the moon eclipsing the sun and showed stars had an exposure of 2 sec, F2 and ISO 1600.
