The only true key is the second right and left from the center tail feathers -- if they are notched, it is rufous, else it is Allen's. Other than that, generally, rufous tend to be a little smaller, stockier, and have a straighter beak. They are also noted as more aggressive, but Allen's, in my observations, can be damn testy, too.
