Having raised the issue about UK fire hydrants in #5 I thought I would go out and shoot a proper one rather than the exemplar sign in #5.
Oh my goodness, they are as rare as rocking horse manure. Within a five mile radius around my house I could only find this rather pathetic example. I queried this with my local Fire & Rescue Authority and I found out that when a fire appliance goes out on a 'shout' today they are given a printout containing all the details of the call, including a map of the area showing the location of all the fire hydrants and other essential information.
I understand that, as these traditional signs were continually being defaced/destroyed by vandals, it became too expensive to replace them and in any case they were no longer required.
