There is a solenoid in the rig that times the interval between the dispense of 2 water droplets and the delay before it trips the shutter (and therefore the flash). Setting it up and tweaking it was a bit of a pain but when you finally got it right it worked like a champ. I mounted all of the components on a piece of 3/4" pine. I added food coloring (red for the top and blue for the bottom) to the water to add color and shot through a piece of blue acetate. I increased the viscosity of the water with xanthum gum, which improves the shape of the crown and column. It took about 30 tries to get this one shot.
