When you make a photograph, you're the one there. You know what is happening. If you showed me that first photograph without the back story I'd wonder what the Hell I was looking at. Even the contrasty version doesn't really say "water hitting water" to me. The third one gives the viewer something to focus on and immediately identify. You must realize that the human attention span really isn't all that long these days and if someone has to look at the photo for a while to "get it" you run a higher chance of them just walking away from it all together. Now, you have your opinion because of your experience taking the photograph, but you can't expect everyone to view the photograph as YOU view it. Hell, you can't expect anyone to ever view your photographs as you do. I know Pete came off a little harsh but when you post your photos on a public forum, in the Critique section nonetheless, you must be prepared for anything and everything you're going to get in return. I know sometimes I'll get comments that I may not agree with or want to agree with due to my own personal affinity to a photo but I take it as unbiased opinion and use it to make my next photograph better. We're all constantly learning and that's what makes this forum great. You said something about this not being "that kind" of place (referring to the abstract, artsy, "deeper meaning" photos) but if you search my posts you'll find an abstract set of mine that has been getting good reviews. We can all appreciate a photograph for more than what it is, we just won't hesitate to give you our honest and unbiased opinion. You can either roll with it and use it to improve, or don't ask. Sorry for being so blunt and lengthy but I see this all the time and is the reason I started the C&C thread.
