Walk around lens help

I'm trying to decide between the Nikon AF-S 28-300mm F3.5-5.6 VR IF-ED and the NIKKOR AF-S 24-120mm f/4G ED VR.
Is the extra speed at the top of the 24-120 worth the lack of extra reach?
Any idea on how these lenses compare IQ wise?

Both are a fair chunk of change, so I want to make a informed choice.

I think it depends on what type of photos you want to take to decide whether the extra reach is worth it for you. I went for the 28-300mm on my D800 and the results have been excellent. I have used it on holiday and at my daughters wedding.

Since you already have a 24-70, I'd go for the 28-300. This would be more valuable as a walk around vacation lens.

But again, just my opinion.

I've been this route before and I ended up with the 24-120mm f4 due to the lighter weight advantage, longer reach and constant aperture. But in the end, since I had to choose between the 24-70mm f2.8 vs 24-120mm f4, I chose to keep the 24-70mm instead although it was much heavier. Go figure.

Both are great lenses for daylight just like any other lenses. Augment it with a flash for indoor use.

Seems to me you have all the ranges covered so if you're looking to not have to change lenses as often I'd recommend the 28-300, but thats not based on any actual usage :( as I dont own either lens (yet anyway)

You can goto DXO to compare lens/camera IQ. Simply select your camera, and then the lens from their tested database for comparisons... You can also filter the results based on your projected intended usage.

Don't blame me if you get stuck over there for hours :mask:

Thanks all for your input.
Yeah; I'm not planning on getting rid of the Tammy 24-70. It's just such a great lens.
This is more for when I dont want to lug too much around, ditching the grip etc. Trying to make the D800 as compact as possible.

Looks like the 28-300 is the winner.
Thanks again! Much appreciated.
