VR causes lens failure merely by tilting the lens?

I bought a brand new Nikon D5100 with 18-55 VR kit lens. All I did was tilt the camera from a landscape to a portrait position while holding it to take a picture. I experienced a sudden movement/shift in my subject through the viewfinder. For a moment I thought the lens fell off from the body but it didn't. From then on I got the "lens not attached" message. Only 2 weeks since I bought it. Got it exchanged. Will VR cause the lens to fail if the camera is tilted from a horizontal position to a vertical position?

This is the first time I've heard of this. I just bought a new D5100 just like yours with the same kit lens, and I haven't ran into any issues with the lens. You might just have gotten a defective lens.

Thanks for the reply. I was pretty sure I fitted the lens with a loud click. I never removed the lens after I put it on 2 weeks ago when I got it. I took more than 78 pictures using all the different settings, tilting the camera in all directions, before this happened. After I got the replacement camera yesterday, I switched off the VR since my hands are quite steady and the lens is only a 18-55.
I've updated my profile to a newbie since that's what I am actually and am learning the ropes. :)
