These are the ones that screw on the front of you lenses. They really work? I just bought one for 15.00 so I'm not out much.

They "work", these "Auxiliary" lenses have been around for a long time. With an SLR or Mirrorless, easy to use: just ignore the distance scale on your lens. If big enough, preserves the F-Stop of a reasonably fast lens. Pixel-Peeping, you will see some loss of sharpness and maybe some chromatic aberration creeping in. For $15- fun accessory to play with.

These are actually the "converters'' (often erroneously called "filters" or "lenses"). Some are designed to be mounted at the rear end of lenses, others are designed to be mounted at the front. Wide, tele, and macro/close up. Generally, those designed to be mounted at the top of the lenses (using a filter thread) tend to degrade the optical quality of your "system" by raising the level of vignetting, distortions, CA and softness, though I've seen some good photos taken with standard-prime lenses + "macro". Here, in Serbia (where I live) the most popular producer of such "addons" is Cokin.

Ah, what the heck. 15.00 and free shipping. Might be fun to mess around with. If not, well, it can be a target for my air rifle!

Well, it is not THAT bad that you should get rid of it. Just don't expect razor-sharp photos from it, especially when used with telephoto end of a zoom (basically, these converters are designed with the aim of "extending" the focal length of relatively "modest" primes such as "standard" 50mm, or 35mm, so that one does not have to buy a "portraiture", or, if one already owns a "portraiture" 100mm, he does not have to invest money in 200mm+ "strong telephoto" lens...). You could find yourself in a situation where you just WANT to take the photo that is soft or blurry, in order to accentuate certain "atmosphere" etc., and at the same time you need to "reach a bit farther", but all you got with you at the moment is that 18-55mm and a converter...
