Hi all,
I have used the hd video recording feature many times but there were short events
where a record lasted maybe for 3 - 5 minutes , recently I was making a tutorials having my camera tripod mounted recording video of doing a computer upgrade,
I noticed the video was timing out stopping recording, there is plenty of memory left however every time I restarted to record again it would time out and stop...
Is there a setting for a video timeout anywhere in the menus, I went through most of it and I can not see anything that would allow me to overwrite the video record time out setting., maybe I missed something...

anyone ?

thanks.

The time is limited and can not be changed. I think the higher the resolution the shorter the time so you might work with that some to see if you can get it longer. Also I think there is a 2GB limit no matter what.

Read the manual. There are maximum record times for each of the resolution settings. I'm not familiar with the D5100, but for the D7000 it was somewhere around 20 minutes. It has nothing to do with storage and more to do with preventing the sensor from overheating. Given that you haven't said how long it is recording there's not much more to offer.

Other than read the manual.

Time limit can* be changed, but as anything fun out there, at your own risk. Nikon-Patch

I did their 3rd party battery patch successfully and haven't looked back since pretty much.
