Upgrading! Need advice PLEASE!

Hi there! I am new to this forum but am excited to be involved in an online nikon community!! I am shooting with a Nikon d90, and am looking to upgrade as I am shooting a few weddings this summer. I am interested in a camera that does well in low light situations, as well as more MP's.
A friend has a D700 and is willing to sell it to me, but it's the same MP's as my d90, so I feel that it won't be as much of an upgrade as I need. I am looking for a full frame, as I have a handful of good prime lenses. The d800 interests me, but the price tag is a little high and i'm not sure I necessarily need to upgrade to a camera of that capacity.

Has anyone else used a D90 as a startup camera and upgraded from there? If so, what did you upgrade to, and why?

Thank you kindly for all of your help! I look forward with chatting with some fellow photographers :) :)

I would say to maybe try a D610. That might better meet your budget. I upgraded to a D7000 but many have upgraded to the D7100 and have nothing but praise for it.

If you have the funds, then go for D750, which has better low light capabilities compared to D610. Other wise all the current sensors, DX and FX have excellent low light (high ISO) capabilities. The FX ones are 1EV better than the DX, but both are way ahead of D90.

Although they're both a different generation, when looking at the stats, there should be little difference between the D610 and D750 when it comes to ISO performance.

The D750's sensor is a couple of % more efficient and its sensor pixels can collect a little bit more but for the rest, they're fairly equal in sensor performance. Read and conversion noise are very similar too. I'd say they're both more than 1EV ahead on DX when it comes to low light. Considering how well my D750 does in low light, I'd not think the D610 to behave different.

To give you an idea; this is an ISO 3200 shot. Don't pay attention to the EXIF data, I shoot different than most.

I didn't correct any noise in post to show it:

I started out with a D90 and currently use a D610 as my main camera. There is a huge difference in low light capabilities between these two bodies. The D610 is the least expensive FX body currently in production (if you are looking to buy new). The D600 had a sensor spot problem, and although I had one and sent it in for repair 3 times, Nikon couldn't resolve the issue with mine.

The D750 is the next least expensive FX body in production. The differences between the D610 and the D750 aren't huge. You won't see much of any difference between the sensors of these two cameras. Both are very capable for low light. I've used my D610 for photographing dramas--many of which are taken in low light as well as many taken with a high dynamic range (lots of dark areas as well as the bright areas from the spot lights). The D610 does quite well.

If you are considering shooting in low light, be sure to use a tripod as there is a limit to shooting sharply while hand holding in low light situations. Good luck in your search. :)

I've been shooting a D600 for 2 years and it's great at high ISO. However, it is not so great at low light focusing. I understand that the 750 is much better at achieving focus in low light situations than the 600/610. I am still kicking myself for not getting a refurbed 750 when Nikon had them for 10% off in December ($1900).
