Without going technical the D5300 is portable and the D7 series albeit is a super camera is bulky and a drag for the day.

Go with the D7100 for the lens compatibility you can use AF lenses on it which are not going to be as costly as AF-S. The only reason to get that D5300 is if you cannot hold the D7100.
