Trying out Google Chrome

Just downloaded and installed Chrome. Meh! Not thrilled. It is not as fast as Firefox at rendering pages . . . for me anyway.

I did some settings adjustments according to some web search finds. No real change in browser speed.

I don't mind the GUI but I see no need for it unless it is better than what I have used for the past four years or more.

I have also disabled most of my plugins and extensions and no real change either.

What is supposed to make Google Chrome faster at rendering pages is the fact that your computer opens separate processes for each tab open. This is pretty intensive for some computers to handle but if you have enough RAM you shouldn't notice it slowing anything down. Also, Google chrome runs Adobe Flash built in so you don't have to have Adobe Flash on your computer to use it. You might have to go into the plugins in Google chrome to disable one so you don't have two forms of Flash running, this can cause it to crash.

Funny how it works differently for people and computers. I couldn't get FF to work worth beans. But Google Chrome is running excellent. It made me realize just how badly I suffered all these years with IE.

I have been using Google Chrome for many years. It has all the plug-ins I need, and even use Google Docs for storing some docs across multi computers, so I can access them no matter where I am, or what computer I am on at the time. I like Chrome a lot, but to be honest they seem to be wanting to "do it all" lately, and that sometimes does not always mean the best for the end user. I also have a Chrome Book I use at work when I am displaced by the book keeper who needs access to the main computer where Quickbooks is. The Chrome Book is more than adequate for surfing and minor email, but that is another issue.

I found IE awful on this forum - I couldn't embed photos from my gallery, and replying to threads was almost impossible as it missed key presses, so I had to type at 2 words per minute... As soon as I changed to Chrome, everything is fixed!

I did read somewhere that Chrome no longer plays well with Win XP. I am still on XP Pro and cannot upgrade to Win 7. Firefox is definitely faster for me on this computer. I disabled all the plugins and extensions on Chrome and it made no difference.

What are the specs on your current computer? Considering it's Windows XP I'm going to assume it's an older computer so that may be why Chrome doesn't run well. Chrome can be pretty demanding on systems.

Yeah I can see Chrome being pretty difficult to run on that system especially if you have other programs open and multiple browser tabs open. I would suggest just using Firefox if that works better for you until you eventually get that comp you want or at least increase ram.

This computer I have now is maxed out on RAM and HDD space. It will only see 1gig RAM and up to the 80gig HDD each. Cannot upgrade OS either. No upgraded BIOS available for it anymore.

I use Chrome mainly because it syncs my calendar, gmail and drive stuff with my android phone. I can get all my info and documents when and where I need them. :)

I haven't tried it, but this website tested a browser called GreenBrowser (available on CNET Download.com) and found that it was the best browser for Memory and CPU usage. It also wasn't any slower than the fastest browsers either.

I just tried the green Browser. It blows chunks. Clunky, ugly, written by Chinese designer and is basically a bad version of IE.

Oops...well scratch that one off the list then. I actually had no idea how it worked or looked. I was just looking for one that was very low resources. I went through this same thing before I built my new computer. Had an old (like 7 or 8 years) HP Windows XP desktop computer and I had to go and find the lowest resource programs for all of the things I used (browser, anti-virus - that was a huge one, etc). Hope you get everything straightened out and can upgrade the computer, then this will all be moot.
