trouble using flash and foreground

Looking to understand why when I use my d7100 to fill in foreground with flash that everything is blown out. When I had a cheaper Nikon DSLR to fill in foreground, I was able to do so with great precision and with no extra adjustments-- just pressing the flash button and adjusting distance to fill in. When I attempt to do this with the 7100, everything is massive overexposed in aperture mode. Thanks for advice!

No, I currently have it set at 1000.

do you have it in ttl mode

might have flash exposure compensation turned up

Actually, it was the auto iso. Once I turned on auto iso I was able to get the desired result. Thanks all!!!
