Trip to the Beach :)

Went with a couple of photography friends and my wife to a nature reserve on Sunday and here are a few pics. The area was actually kind of desolated by hurricane sandy but still managed to get a few shots.

I tried out the 300 2.8 Ai-S with 1.6 autofocus teleconverter on the D800. I was impressed by the reach, but there was a lot of chromatic aberration in the converter so I ended up not using it early on in the shoot. Oh well. I think the bright sunlight brought that out a lot more. Here's a white heron in the grass taken from maybe 200 ft away?

And 100% crop:

Some rocks on the beach...taken with the D7000 with 55-200 mm DX lens.

Back to the D800, this time with the 300 2.8 Ai-S without the teleconverter (partial crop).

Wife took quite a few shots of me, here's one...

And I took a gazillion shots of her, here's one...

We spent more time shooting each other and our friends (another couple) than the scenery/wildlife, LOL....all in all a fun day. And to cap it off, my wife got some nice shots of a turkey on the road from our car (I had only my 50 mm on at the time while she still had her 55-200 DX lens, and this is an uncropped image).

Just for fun here are a couple more examples of photos taken with the combination of the 300 mm f2.8 Ai-S lens without the teleconverter showing what you can do with a 20 year old manual focus lens with the D800.

Here's the original uncropped image.

Bird3001.jpg

And here's 100% crop, and nothing was done to this image apart from a little bit of adjustment in the curves (LUT) and slight reduction in the green color channel.

Another example full field....

And 100% crop...

Keep in mind that this is 300 mm so this bird is pretty far off. These are not really great photos but they illustrated to me at least that this lens has some real utility and resolving power with the D800. To be able to pick up details in the feathers from that kind of distance still to me is just incredible.

Here is the pic info for those techies out there. :)
