You'll lose that slight bit of reach from 70-85 on the Tamron, but everything I've read and seen about the Tamron 24-70/2.8 is that IQ is outstanding. The Tamron also gives you VC, which the Nikon 24-70/2.8 is currently missing. The Tamron model is currently on my wish list.The Nikon 17-55 will give you more UWA from 17-24, but then you'll see a lot less reach with the loss of 55-85mm.
